Date It Before You Buy It
A short era-check guide for reading labels, lines and construction before overpaying for an archive dress.
A quicker version of the era check so you can read language, labels, and construction more calmly.
Fast era check
• Read the exact label wording.
• Confirm main line versus diffusion line.
• Look for one construction cue, not ten at once.
The three fastest signals
Label wording: DOLCE&GABBANA tight usually means main line. D and G or D and G Dolce and Gabbana signals diffusion.
Main line versus diffusion: not the same value story, not the same archive logic.
Construction cue: exposed boning, structured bodice, corset logic, or specific print vocabulary often narrows the era faster than seller language.
Do not overpay for language
Old does not automatically mean archive. Archive does not automatically mean premium. Premium needs proof.
One practical route
• Ask for a readable label photo.
• Check whether the piece is main line or diffusion.
• Then ask whether the construction actually supports the era claim.
